"My children will always be seen as a blessing in my eyes, and the autism is a gift, not a disability."

Branches On the Spectrum

In Central Montana, there is a need for a place where kids with ASD can go for instruction in a safe place to learn how to interact with the world in which they live. We are a new non-profit that wishes to meet this need. Our Stepping Stone programs allow kids to improve their personal Social Skills and then step out to another local program or the workforce.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact, learn, and behave. Key features of ASD include challenges with social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors, all of which can significantly impact daily functioning, such as in school or the workplace. Since ASD varies greatly in symptom severity and presentation, it is known as a "spectrum" disorder. Individuals with ASD may live independently and function well in society, while others may need more extensive support.

Although ASD and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are distinct conditions, they share some overlapping symptoms, such as difficulty focusing or social interaction challenges. Research continues to examine how these two developmental disorders are related, with findings showing that having one can increase the likelihood of showing traits of the other. Early screening and interventions, as recommended by organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, are crucial for improving outcomes and quality of life for those with ASD.

Stepping Stones

1 in 36 children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Montana has around 7% of high-risk children who are on the Spectrum. Branches On the Spectrum is a new local (Great Falls, Montana) non-profit organization that helps the local families of ASD children learn social skills in a safe and fun farm environment.

Stepping Stones is a level progress tool that shows the individual's progress in the different programs such as Garden, Horses, Chickens, and Cows. The individual will start at ground level and progress up the stones until the goal is met. Each time a goal is met they may Step on to another program or level. Another Stepping Stone is if the individual and their family decide to Step into another local organization.

Goals agreed upon by the ASD youth's family and Branches On the Spectrum will address the strengths and needs of the participant. Program goals will be documented at each Stone (level) to show the overall growth. Each participant will have 1 coach to work with in 2-hour time blocks as many times a month as the families would like for their child. Siblings of the ASD youth are encouraged to join the program as well.
